The 1999 SERC Preparatory School in Theoretical High Energy Physics (THEP)
will be held, from 10 May to 5 June 1999, at the Centre for Theoretical
Studies, Indian Institute of Science, Bangalore-560012, under the auspices
of the Department of Science and Technology (DST).
The purpose of this school is to train young research workers in basic
areas of THEP. The Preparatory School will consist of courses on (the
instructors mentioned below are tentative):
(1) Quantum Field Theory (S. Jain), (2) Methods of Mathematical Physics (D. Sen), (3) Particle Physics (A. Patel), (4) The Standard Model (B. Ananthanarayan).
Applications will be considered, on an all India basis, from students
enrolled in research programmes in high energy physics, both theoretical
and experimental. Students already enrolled for the Ph.D. degree, as well
as students who have just finished their M.Sc. degree and are planning to
enroll for the Ph.D. degree, are eligible for application. Research students
working in areas closely related to THEP (e.g. Theoretical Condensed Matter
Physics, Nuclear Physics, Astrophysics) are also encouraged to apply.
Young university teachers, engaged in teaching high energy physics, may
also apply for participation in this Preparatory School.
Please send in your application on plain paper providing the following
particulars:
Please arrange to send two recommendation letters directly (one from the thesis/project superviser). They should clearly mention the candidate's background knowledge and aptitude for research, as well as the necessity or otherwise of attending the Preparatory School.
Financial support for train travel, with free boarding and lodging, will
be provided to about 30 selected participants. The last date for receiving
applications and recommendation letters is 22 March 1999. Selected candidates
will be informed by 31 March 1999. To avoid last minute rush for train
reservations in summer, applicants are advised to buy tickets well in advance.
