Advanced mathematical methods of physics: PHY/HEP 316. This is a 48 lecture course covering group theory and differential geometry. The emphasis was on group theory. Discrete, Lie groups, Lie algebra, classification of Lie algebras were covered. For the differential geometry part, differential forms, curvature, Christoffel symbols, Riemann tensor, homotopy and homology were discussed.
The students were asked to make a presentation on an advanced topic of their choice. These are linked below: 1. Conformal symmetry of Maxwell's equations, Shouvik Datta, CHEP 2. Clifford algebra and spinor representations in arbitrary dimensions, Manisha Thaukrathi, CHEP 3. Symmetry Analysis in Fluid Dynamics, Saikishan Suryanarayanan, JNCASR 4. Symmetry groups of PDEs, Joy Monteiro, CAOS 5. Group theoretic approach to splitting of orbital in crystal potential, Maheswar Maji, Physics 6. Calculation of band structure using group theory, Sudeep Ghosh, Physics 7 & 8. SU(5) and grand unification, Ranjan Modak and Debabrata Pramanik, Physics
The weightage was 30% for assignments, 60% for presentation and 10% for class performance. |
