Title: Stress testing the Standard Model of Particle Physics

Abstract:
In the coming years the Large Hadron Collider at CERN will be upgraded to operate with much higher luminosity, leading to vastly more data and much more precise measurements. Clearly, theoretical predictions must match or exceed this precision so that the Standard Model can be stress-tested, and possibly reveal signs of new interactions or particles. In this colloquium I will clarify how and why such increase in precision is undertaken, and show some remarkable innovations, many due to advanced mathematics, that propel this enterprise forwards.
